Belfast Debate on Europe

13-15 September 2019
A series of debates organised by the German Academy for Language and Literature and the S. Fischer Foundation in cooperation with local institutions

Since 2012, the Debates on Europe have provided an open forum for discussion in places where Europe’s fundamental ideas are at stake. They question the different ideas of what European coexistence could look like, address threats to democratic freedoms and facilitate exchange across the often conflict-laden borders of national, cultural, ethnic or religious affiliations. So far, the debates have been held in Eastern and South-Eastern Europe, but this year they move westwards for the first time – to the Northern Irish city of Belfast.
